RUMFORD — Rumford police and officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating a death at a mill owned by NewPage Corporation in Rumford.

Tony Lyons, a spokesman for the Rumford paper mill, confirmed that a contracted worker – not a mill employee – was killed Monday around 2:30 p.m.

Lyons said the section of the mill where the accident occurred will remain closed while authorities investigate.

Lyons declined to identify the man and the company he works for. He also said it was too early in the investigation to comment on what happened.

According to the company’s website, NewPage, which was established in 2005, is the leading producer of printing and specialty papers in North America.

In addition to Maine, the company operates paper mills in Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
