Rescuers help injured hiker and hiker who lost his way

Rescue workers had a busy night on New Hampshire’s Mount Monadnock.

Conservation officers got the call just after 3 p.m. Tuesday that a hiker had injured her ankle and needed assistance. Several hours later they located 32-year-old Jocelyn Frain of Hinsdale near the summit. Rescuers said she worked her way partly down the mountain before they reached her with a litter.

On the way down the mountain with Frain, rescuers were passed by 27-year-old Douglas Phenan of Concord about 6 p.m., headed up the mountain. They would hear from him several hours later, after darkness fell and he became disoriented. He had no map or gear to assist him.

Rescuers headed back up the mountain and escorted Phenan back to his car by 10:45.

Cape Wind opponents file federal appeal in lawsuit

A Cape Cod town and other local opponents of the Cape Wind energy project are appealing a federal judge’s decision to dismiss their lawsuit.

The town of Barnstable, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound and local businesses and residents argue in their appeal that the judge was wrong to rule that the federal court had no jurisdiction in their suit, which challenged the company’s contract to sell energy to NSTAR, a local utility provider. The appeal was filed Tuesday in Boston.

In their original lawsuit, opponents of the project alleged state regulators had coerced NSTAR into agreeing to buy power from Cape Wind at above-market rates that will lead to higher energy costs. Cape Wind proposes building more than 100 turbines in Nantucket Sound.

Priest pleads not guilty to embezzlement charges

A Roman Catholic priest has pleaded not guilty to stealing more than $230,000 from the parish where he served as pastor.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported that the Rev. Stephen Gemme was arraigned Wednesday on five counts of larceny by a common scheme over $250. The thefts from St. Bernadette in Northborough allegedly were to support a gambling habit.

Gemme was released on personal recognizance and returns to court Oct. 7. He was indicted last week.

The Worcester Diocese announced last October that Gemme had stolen from two accounts since 2008. Bishop Robert McManus said then that Gemme acknowledged a gambling problem and resigned. He was granted a medical leave of absence.

The bishop said parishioners should remember all the good Gemme has done. Gemme had been appointed to the parish in 2003.
