More people are going to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, on the Nova Star ferry, according to a statement issued Thursday by its operators.

Mark Amundsen, president and CEO of Nova Star Cruises, said the company’s latest figures show that 20,206 tickets have been purchased during August. That’s an increase from July, when 13,043 passengers took the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth.

The current August average of 652 passengers per day is in line with Nova Star Cruises’ goal to host 500 to 700 passengers per day during its peak season, Amundsen said.

“Nova Star’s August passenger numbers provide confidence that there is a growing market in the United States and Canada for the ferry service,” Admundsen said.

The ferry began offering service between Portland and Nova Scotia on May 15. The ship accommodates more than 700 passengers.
