Choosing a college is a very difficult family decision, but with that said, Maine should be proud that an article by Kim Clark in the August Money Magazine recognized Maine Maritime Academy as one of the best college values for the money.

Using a unique measurement that included quality, affordability and career earnings, MMA was chosen No. 12 out of roughly 1,500 four-year colleges.

MMA rated No. 12 because it offers students a great education at a comparatively affordable price that leads to guaranteed employment. The only other Maine college named in the top 50 is Bowdoin College, at No. 44.

All schools were judged on graduation rates at or above the median, then ranked on 17 factors reflecting education, quality, affordability and alumni earnings. (Find the full rankings at money.com/colleges.) MMA ranked up there with MIT, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford.

College-bound students in Maine should review the Money article to help them make the correct choice for their wallet.

MMA also rated No. 4 in the U.S. as a value all-star college in this article, based on its ability to add to the graduation and earnings potential of its student body.

As a graduate of MMA and uncle of a recent Bowdoin College student-athlete, I can say that Maine should be very proud of its affordable colleges, and Money Magazine spells this out. With all the discussion of the University of Maine System, we still have quality education in Maine that can lead to good-paying jobs anywhere in the world.
