South Portland police arrested a local man Thursday who was observed trying to steal items from a number of unlocked vehicles parked in his own neighborhood.

A resident of Carter Street called police after watching a male enter a vehicle that the resident knew did not belong to him.

The resident then saw the man walk throughout the neighborhood, pulling on the door handles of several vehicles parked in driveways.

Police responded to the area and found the suspect who matched the witness’s description.

Brian Landry, 31, was found in possession of items that were stolen from a vehicle, police said. He was arrested and taken to Cumberland County Jail.

After obtaining a warrant, police also searched Landry’s residence on Carter Street and discovered several other items believed to have been stolen.

He has been charged with two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, a Class D misdemeanor, and one count of receiving stolen property, a Class C felony because of his prior convictions. He could face additional charges as well.

South Portland police said Landry’s arrest underscores the importance of locking vehicles.
