CUMBERLAND — With the second half kickoff imminent, both banks of lights behind the Fryeburg Academy sideline went dark Friday night at Hutchins Field.

An appropriate metaphor, perhaps, but way too late.

Greely had long ago extinguished any flicker of hope for the visiting Raiders by scoring six first-quarter touchdowns on the way to a 54-18 Western Class B football victory.

Both teams are 1-1.

“They have a speed element that we had a hard time dealing with,” said Fryeburg Coach David Turner, whose team rallied in the fourth quarter last week to hand Kennebunk a surprising 14-12 loss. “We kind of knew that coming in, but it’s hard to emulate it in practice.”

Scouting would not have helped much, because Greely quarterback Matt Pisini, running back Sam Peck and wide receiver Nick Dubois all missed the season opener last week, a 47-0 loss to Marshwood.

On Friday night, those three accounted for 38 points.

“They’re a huge part of our team and having them back helped us out a lot,” said sophomore Andrew Ray, who returned a short punt 36 yards for one touchdown and scored another on a 24-yard interception return. “We knew it was going to be a lot different than last week, having everybody back and everybody healthy.”

Pisini, a junior, had been out two weeks with a thumb injury. His first carry was an option keeper good for a 35-yard touchdown. His second mirrored the first, but covered 65 yards.

“I was waiting all week for this Friday night,” Pisini said. “Just to come out and have a great time with all the boys back.”

Pisini finished with 135 yards rushing on seven carries and completed two of four passes, including a 68-yard strike to Dubois that capped a busy first quarter of scoring at 41-12.

“We had some missed assignments and then we had some poor tackling,” Turner said. “When that happens against a team with speed, it turns a six- or seven-yard gain into a 60-yard gain. That’s the problem when you play a team with speed. You have very little margin for error. They make you pay.”

Greely’s first four touchdowns required all of seven plays.

Peck’s first carry covered 26 yards. His second went for 41 and a touchdown. Throw in a few short punts and Ray’s interception return and the game quickly turned into a rout.

Not what Greely Coach Dave Higgins said he expected.

“No, absolutely not,” he said. “We’re still recovering from last week. We knew our guys would come back and we thought we would be OK.”

When Fryeburg switched punters and Kyle Bennett boomed a 60-yarder, Peck chased it down, picked it up on the bounce while facing his own end zone, turned and zig-zagged 67 yards for his third touchdown. He also scored on a 21-yard run early in the second quarter and finished with 101 rushing yards on nine carries.

“The line blocked well for us,” he said. “They opened a lot of holes and we exploited them.”

Peck had to sit out against Marshwood because he was flagged for two personal fouls in a preseason game.

“It was tough because I felt like I let my team down,” he said. “But we regrouped. We came back. A lot of people are stepping up this year. We’re no joke.”

Quarterback Ryan Gullikson led Fryeburg with a 35-yard scoring run and TD passes of seven yards to Brandon Ludwig and 6 yards to Ben Southwick.

After a 15-minute delay that thinned the crowd considerably, the lights returned, but there was no scoring in the second half.
