CUMBERLAND — Jocelyn Mitiguy is usually a midfielder for the Greely girls’ soccer team, but her coach, Josh Muscadin, opted to start her Saturday at striker.

Just over seven minutes into a 3-1 win against arch-rival Falmouth, Mitiguy moved back to the middle of the field. That’s because the lanky junior had already done her job, creating the first goal and scoring the second.

“My primary position is center mid, but he moves me up to striker,” Mitiguy said. “(When I play striker), it just really builds up my momentum more and I’m looking to go to that goal.”

On both of Greely’s early goals, Mitiguy used a combination of speed and skill to split two defenders. The first time, Falmouth keeper Adelaide Cooke was able to deflect a tight-angled shot, only to have Ellie Schad easily knock in the rebound after it bounded to the front of the goal area.

The next time, Mitiguy got herself free in front and chipped the ball over Cooke.

“She is very talented, and one (factor) is speed, and of course her quick burst of acceleration is tremendous,” Muscadin said. “A lot of times when the defender really tries to get into it, she’s already two steps ahead. And I think being able to read the play and anticipate where the ball is going to be (is another strength).”

Greely improved to 3-0. Falmouth is 1-1-1.

“We dug ourselves too big a hole,” Falmouth Coach Andrew Pelletier said. “We knew what we were getting into (with Mitiguy). Some of these girls play with her year round, see her year round. We knew what we had to do and we were two mistakes away from either getting a result or ending up 1-1.”

After Greely’s early burst, Falmouth did have some good chances in the first half. Both Georgia Babikian and Cali Wiberg had shots hit the post. In the second half, speedy Falmouth wing Emma England created two strong bids, just missing the net on both.

Babikian cut the lead to 2-1 with 25:28 to play when she finished off a three-on-one in concert with Tyler Spence and Emma Van Wickler.

Greely responded when Izzy Hutnak sent a well-placed through ball to Kristina Volta, who was taken down by a Falmouth challenge in the penalty area. Mitiguy cleanly struck the penalty kick for a 3-1 lead.

“I don’t think that was a fair call, but we got away with one later on, so it is what it is,” Pelletier said.

Greely controlled most of the play the rest of the way, getting solid contributions from Allison Coon in the midfield and reserve forward Courtney Sullivan, while Mitiguy just missed on four more scoring bids.

Coon was a prime example of Greely showing it could handle tough, physical plays on the ball.

“In high school soccer it’s very physical,” Muscadin said. “The kids know that we don’t go play dirty and the other team is not trying to hurt you, but it’s a very contact sport, so be prepared.”
