Open House, 11 a.m. in Cape Neddick
The Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet the staff, volunteers and live animal ambassadors. Participants can learn about New England wildlife and the center’s work. The center cares for more than 1,600 injured and orphaned wild animals each year. It is located at 385 Mountain Rd. Avian Ecology, 9 a.m. in Jefferson
Hidden Valley Nature Center and the Biodiversity Research Institute will offer a demonstration on mist-netting, a common method for capturing birds. Learn about local bird ecology with a special emphasis on annual migrations and diseases and other threats. Patrick Keenan, BRI’s outreach director, will share experiences from his involvement in research and talk about the work the institute is doing in Maine. The class runs from 9 to 11 a.m. The suggested donation is $12. Register at www.hvnc.org/registration. The rain date is Sept. 18.

Florida Lake, 8 a.m. in Freeport
Florida Lake is Freeport’s largest freshwater body. It provides prime waterfowl and wading bird habitat, and a stopover point for migratory species. The area is a rich mix of woodlands, seasonally flooded shrub-swamps and aquatic vegetation. Join Merrymeeting Audubon for a hike and birding trip around the lake. Meet at the Brunswick Hannaford at 35 Elm St. to carpool to the lake, which is located on Route 125 in Freeport.
