A Portland man was injured Sunday night when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car on outer Forest Avenue, police said.

The bicyclist, Steven Bowie, 43, was hit by a 2005 Chevy Impala as he attempted to cross the street about 7:45 p.m. in front of Tortilla Flat, a Mexican restaurant at 1871 Forest Ave., police said.

The driver of the car, Steven Bickford, 61, of Westbrook, was not injured.

Bowie was treated at Maine Medical Center and released.

Speed does not appear to have been a factor in the accident, but “alcohol may be a factor for the bicyclist,” police said.

A portion of Forest Avenue was shut down for several hours Sunday night after the accident, which remains under investigation by the police department’s Traffic Division. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Traffic Division at 874-8532.
