Appalachian Mountain Club chapter hosting hiking talk

The Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club will offer the talk “Triple Crown: How One Mainer Made It” Wednesday evening at Curtis Memorial Library at 23 Pleasant St.

Tom Jamrog, of Lincolnville, will share his experiences of hiking some of America’s national scenic trails. Topics covered will include how to physically train for a thru-hike and a look at tools, equipment and resources to get started.

The meeting will begin with a group potluck meal at 6 p.m. followed by the talk at 7 p.m.

The deadline for entering works in the sixth annual Yarmouth Art Festival is 6 p.m. Friday. The festival will be held Oct. 22-25 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 396 Gilman Road. Created in 2009 as a venue for artists statewide, the festival welcomes online submissions of paintings, sculpture, photography, etching and digital media from any artist ages 18 and older who maintains a residence in Maine.

Theater’s ‘Play Me A Story’ event to have nine sessions

Portland Stage and the Theatre for Kids program is offering nine Saturday sessions of its “Play Me A Story” event for children beginning Sept. 20

Each session begins with fun activities, then children’s books performed by professional actors. Children are then taken to a workshop run by performing artists.

African Gala celebrating food culture set Saturday

An African Gala, celebrating African food and culture, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart/St. Dominic Church.

The colorful event will feature traditional dishes from Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan and many other countries.

Burundi dancers and drummers and Les Voix des Anges, a choir comprised of nearly 30 people, will perform.

The new AARP Smart Driver course, for drivers age 50 and older, will be from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the AARP state office at 1685 Congress St.

Wayside Food Program to hold three-day food drive

Wayside Food Programs will hold a three-day food drive from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at Whole Foods Market, 2 Somerset St.

Wayside Food Programs collects and distributes food to 47 agencies, including soup kitchens, food pantries and other social service providers in Cumberland County. It also runs free community meals at sites in Portland and Westbrook, and three of its own mobile food pantries.

Fort Allen bicentennial celebration this weekend

The Friends of the Eastern Promenade and the City of Portland will present the 2014 Bicentennial Celebration of Fort Allen on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., a panel of historians will head a discussion on the War of 1812 in Maine and its effects in Portland at the Maine Jewish Museum, 267 Congress St.

On Saturday, a moment-of-silence memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at the 1812 cemetery on the Eastern Promenade. A brief parade processional to Fort Allen will follow with speakers and ceremonies from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Children’s activities will be provided in collaboration with the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization. A variety of Portland food trucks will be on site.

Free Child’s Safety Day scheduled for Saturday

Westbrook Public Safety, Saco & Biddeford Savings and Hannaford have partnered to host a free Child’s Safety Day event from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The event will be held rain or shine in the parking lot between Hannaford and Saco & Biddeford Savings, 2 Hannaford Drive. The event will include a view of a smokehouse, fire trucks, ambulances and police cruisers, a vehicle extrication demonstration, car fire with live firefighting demonstrations and mock crime scenes

Free hot dogs, popcorn, water and soda will be available all day.

Ernie’s Cycle Shop and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine will sponsor a bicycle rodeo and provide bike safety checks.

The Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation will give away free bike helmets to the first 100 kids.

American Revolution topic of historical society talk

“Maine and the American Revolution” will be the topic of a presentation to the New Gloucester Historical Society at 7 p.m. Thursday at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse on Intervale Road, Route 231.

Museum’s Pumpkin Patch Trolley offers family events

The Seashore Trolley Museum’s 16th annual Pumpkin Patch Trolley will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 20, 21, 27 and 28 at the museum at 195 Log Cabin Road.

The event, featuring a variety of family activities, competitions and contests, is intended to celebrate fall with streetcar rides to the pumpkin field, pumpkin decorating and games for children. Adults can enter recipe competition.

Annual children’s cancer walk to be held around state

The 28th Annual Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk will be held Saturday morning at seven locations throughout southern Maine.

Registrations begin at 8 a.m. at each site, with the walk getting underway at 9 a.m. at the following locations: Maine Medical Center Scarborough Campus, Festival Plaza/Riverwalk at Auburn, Capitol Park/Kennebec Rail Trail at Augusta, Brunswick Recreation Center, South School at Rockland, Hosmer Field Athletic Complex at Rumford and the Alfond Youth Center at Waterville.

Money that is raised through the walk will help finance equipment, psychosocial services and research to help find a cure for childhood cancer. All contributions stay in the state of Maine.

There is no registration fee to participate, but to receive a walk T-shirt, participants must raise $25 or more.

Also, at the Scarborough walk location, MCCP will be partnering with Delete Blood Cancer to register willing participants as bone marrow donors.

Candidate forum to focus on key issues affecting education

A legislative candidate forum, focusing on education in kindergarten through grade 12, is being held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at York County Community College on College Drive. Co-sponsored by the Maine School Boards Association and Maine School Superintendents Association, the event brings together candidates who are running for the Maine House and Senate in York County.

The forum is one of nine such sessions planned across the state in September.

Maine School Management Association, the umbrella organization for MSBA and MSSA, is coordinating the forums and has prepared position papers reflecting the two organizations’ stand on key issues affecting public schools.
