FALMOUTH — For the past decade, York has been the team others in the Western Maine Conference measure themselves against.

This season, the gap between York and the rest of the conference appears to have grown.

The Wildcats, who won the Western B title in eight of the past 10 seasons, cruised to a 6-0 win over Falmouth on Monday night to remain undefeated.

In five games this season, York has scored 30 goals and allowed just one.

“We go into every game thinking it’s going to be our state game, which was a tough game we ended up losing,” said Alexandra Jones, recalling York’s 1-0 loss in the state championship game to Nokomis last season. The Wildcats had won 17 straight games entering that state title game. “We want to get back to that game. We want to come out strong. We don’t want to take any game for granted.”

Despite their easy victories, the Wildcats remain a work in progress, according to Coach Barb Marois.

“There’s work to be done still,” Marois said. “We had a good game tonight, but I could sit everyone down and tell them something they can do better or differently. That’s how you grow, how your learn and hopefully keep taking those steps forward.”

The Wildcats dominated the first half. At halftime, they had a 12-0 edge in penalty corners, an 8-0 edge in shots and a 3-0 lead.

“We came into this game thinking this is one of our toughest opponents and we always have a tough time with this team,” said Jones, who scored three goals. “We came in working as a team and it really paid off.’

Jones opened the scoring 12:24 into the game, putting a shot past goalie Caroline Dyhrberg during a scrum in front of the Falmouth cage following a penalty corner.

With 11 minutes left in the first half, Kayla Kelly stuck a shot into the left side of the goal during the scramble following another penalty corner.

Three minutes later, Jones struck again moments after a penalty corner.

Two minutes into the second half, Kelly made it 4-0 when she converted a feed from Devon Datsis into a goal following yet another penalty corner.

The Yachtsmen were awarded their first penalty corner nearly 33 minutes into the game, but the hit was blocked by a defender before it could reach York goalie Olivia Golina, who made four saves to post her 15th shutout in the last two seasons.

With less than 19 minutes left in the game, Jones struck again, finishing off a breakaway.

With 12 minutes left, Datsis completed the scoring.

Despite the lopsided loss, the Yachtsmen (3-2) took some positives from the game.

“We’ve got some young girls playing and I was actually very pleased regardless of the score,” Falmouth Coach Robin Haley said.

“We did some really nice things ourselves at the tail end of the game. Our passing improved, and we created some scoring opportunities. We just didn’t finish.”
