EUROPEAN TOUR: Paul Casey shot a four-under 66 to win the KLM Open with a 14-under total, a single shot ahead of fellow Englishman Simon Dyson.

Casey looked to be cruising to victory before recording his only bogey of the day at the par-3 15th. He followed that with a wild tee shot on the 16th, but his second shot out of the rough landed wide and bounced onto the green, giving him two putts for par.

Dyson, looking for his fourth KLM Open title, birdied the 18th to move within a shot of the lead, but Casey comfortably closed out with pars on the 17th and 18th for his 13th European Tour title.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Two months after exiting the Tour de France because of a leg fracture, Alberto Contador rebounded in style by winning his sixth grand tour title, protecting his lead on the 21st and final stage.

The Tinkoff-Saxo rider won his home race for a third time, to go with two Tour de France victories and one Giro d’Italia title.

Tour of Britian: Dutch rider Dylan van Baarle won overall title, holding onto the lead despite a strong time trial by former champion Bradley Wiggins on a final day featuring two stages in central London.

TENNIS

DAVIS CUP: John Isner and Sam Querrey won their singles matches as the U.S. completed a 5-0 sweep of Slovakia in a World Group playoff.

Isner captured the final nine games and beat Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-0. Querrey then defeated Norbert Gombos 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Isner and Querrey each won two matches in the tie.

Entering play Sunday, the U.S. had already won the first three matches to clinch a spot in the 2015 World Group – the top 16 countries that play for the Davis Cup championship.

 Thomaz Bellucci defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to give Brazil an unassailable 3-1 lead over Spain at Sao Paulo, dropping the five-time Davis Cup champs to the zone groups for the first time since 1996.

 Carlos Berlocq and Leonardo Mayer won singles matches in Sunrise, Florida, rallying Argentina past Israel 3-2 in a World Group playoff.

SOCCER

MLS: Chris Wondolowski’s goal in the 66th minute drew the San Jose Earthquakes even with the Los Angeles Galaxy for a 1-1 tie in the final California Clasico of the season at Santa Clara, California.

Jordan Stewart assisted on the tying score, slotting a pass through a group of Galaxy defenders to find Wondolowski open near the far post.

 FIFA has acknowledged that its executive committee members were given luxury watches by the Brazilian Football Confederation at the World Cup and says its ethics committee is “dealing with the matter.”

A British newspaper, the Sunday Times, reported that senior FIFA officials were given Swiss watches worth $25,000 in gift bags left in their hotel rooms when they arrived in Brazil for the tournament.
