HARPSWELL — A Maine judge has ruled in the public’s favor in a dispute over beach access on Bailey Island.
Superior Court Justice Nancy Mills ruled Monday that the public had earned an easement because Cedar Beach Road has been used for beach access for more than nine generations.
WCSH-TV reports that Mills ruled against the road’s current owner, Betsy Atkins of Coral Gables, Florida.
The dispute over beach access began three years ago when the owners of the road blocked beach access after failing to convince the Town of Harpswell to pay easement rights.
