Thomas College tops USM, 3-0, in men’s soccer

Dakota Duplissie scored two goals to lead Thomas College in a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine at Gorham on Monday.

Tre Ming sent a through ball to Duplissie inside the box for the first goal five minutes into the match. The Terriers (3-2) struck again in the 79th minute as William Nilson scored with an assist from sophomore London Steede-Jackson. Duplisse netted the final goal in the 81st minute, with an assist by Ming.

Elijah Leverett finished with 12 saves for the Huskies (1-5-1).

FOOTBALL: University of Miami backup quarterback Kevin Olsen was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and possession of a fake or stolen driver’s license.

Miami-Dade County jail records show Olsen was booked at 4:11 a.m. Monday and was released on $6,000 bail. Police say Olsen failed field sobriety tests and had five different driver’s licenses on him.

Iowa State lineman Jacob Gannon rejoined the Cyclones less than two weeks after quitting the team.

Coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement that Gannon has been diagnosed with anxiety issues and is receiving treatment.

Gannon opened the season as Iowa State’s starting right tackle, but left the team days before a loss to Kansas State.

 Rutgers is apologizing to Penn State for offensive signs and shirts referencing the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal that some Rutgers fans displayed during a weekend football game.

Rutgers Athletic Director Julie Hermann apologized in a statement Monday for the “classless display” that she said does not represent the New Jersey school’s views or its fan base.

TENNIS

PAN PACIFIC OPEN: Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic rallied from a set down to beat American teenager Madison Keys 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 in the first round at Tokyo.

Top-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany has a first-round bye, as does second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who won the event in 2010.

GOLF

COURSE SOLD: Wentworth Golf Club, one of Britain’s most famous courses and the headquarters of the European Tour, was sold to Chinese firm Reignwood Investments for $220 million.

Chanchai Ruayrungruang, Reignwood’s founder said, “Wentworth is a key strategic acquisition for (a) rapidly growing luxury lifestyle division … we are dedicated to preserving.”

The course was previously owned by restaurant entrepreneur Richard Caring.

BASKETBALL

U.S. WOMEN: Nneka Ogwumike scored 10 points to lead a balanced offense and the U.S. women’s basketball team used a big run in the third quarter to beat Canada 76-51 in an exhibition game at Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The Americans led 35-31 at halftime, and then scored the first 13 points of the third.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE:Mercedes has promoted 19-year-old Pascal Wehrlein to reserve driver, less than a week after the German teenager got behind the wheel of a Formula One car for the first time. Wehrlein will be the backup to championship rivals Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, starting at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday.
