School bus driver killed saving 10-year-old girl

An Ohio school bus driver is being hailed as a hero after tossing a child out of the way of a rolling bus Tuesday morning before the vehicle rolled over the driver herself and she was killed.

“She sacrificed her own life to save the life of this 10-year-old girl,” said Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards.

The bus driver has been identified as 51-year-old Laura Zborowski of Akron.

Edwards said the bus pulled up beside Middlebury Academy in Akron and Zborowski asked the students to perform routine evacuation drills. The students, about 40 ranging from kindergartners to eighth-graders, first exited the bus at the front and lined up single file on the sidewalk as instructed. They then got back on the bus and exited the rear emergency exit, Edwards said.

The 10-year-old girl, the last to exit, was climbing out the back of the bus when the vehicle started rolling backward, Edwards said. Zborowski threw the girl onto the lawn and then the bus rolled over Zborowski.

The parliament session was held as the U.S. carried out an airstrike near Baghdad for the first time since launching an aerial campaign in early August, and French warplanes flying from the United Arab Emirates began reconnaissance missions over Iraq.

Stranded tourists airlifted out of area hit by hurricane

The Mexican government began airlifting the first of thousands of stranded tourists out of the hurricane-ravaged resort area of Los Cabos on Tuesday, as residents picked up the pieces of shattered, flooded homes.

The Interior Ministry said military and commercial planes were carrying travelers out through the Los Cabos international airport, which remained closed to commercial flights due to damage suffered when Hurricane Odile tore through the area Sunday and Monday.

Travelers were being flown free of charge to airports in Tijuana, Mazatlan, Guadalajara and Mexico City to catch connecting flights and, in the case of foreigners, receive consular assistance.

Mayor Ford’s doctor to give medical update Wednesday

A doctor will provide a medical update on Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s tumor on Wednesday, his brother Doug Ford said.

The mayor has been hospitalized since last Wednesday with a tumor in his abdomen. Biopsy results were expected soon.

Ford withdrew his re-election bid Friday, dramatically ending a campaign he had doggedly pursued despite a stint in rehab and calls for him to quit amid drug and alcohol scandals.
