Biddeford firefighters extinguished a fire Sunday night at a two-story apartment house near the city’s downtown.

The fire at 5 Simard Ave. was reported around 8:20 p.m. and was put out before 10 p.m. Biddeford firefighters were assisted on scene by crews from Saco, Arundel. Goodwins Mills, Dayton and Scarborough.

Several residents of the building were displaced, but there were no injuries, according to Biddeford Fire Chief Joseph Warren.

A member of the city’s codes department was called to the scene once the fire was under control.

According to city records, 5 Simard Ave. is a two-unit apartment building owned by Walter Lagrange.

Simard Avenue is in a densely populated area off Pool Street, near the city’s downtown. It is about a half-mile from the Main Street building where a man was killed and another critically injured in an arson fire last week.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Biddeford Fire Department and the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
