We all want to elect a governor with the best ability to govern Maine this year. And I’m not sure who that is! More than ever, this position will take true leadership and involve listening to and earning the respect of legislators.

Debates allow us to hear the candidates’ ideas and responses to the vital issues discussed. Why does the 2014 debate schedule have about a third of the debates compared to the 2010 race?

And many of these debates are happening well after the ballots for general absentees (Sept. 30) and overseas/military (Sept. 19) start coming in. The two major parties are largely or wholly responsible for accepting these schedules. They can also strongly influence if independents are even invited.

All three candidates this year deserve to be heard in debate form before most of the absentee ballots arrive. Let’s make the best-informed decision we can, before we vote.
