YORK — Georgia Babikian, Emma Van Wickler and Marcy Kittredge scored second-half goals Tuesday night as Falmouth rallied to a 3-1 victory against York in a Western Maine Conference schoolgirl soccer game.

Tyler Spence assisted on two goals for the Yachtsmen (3-2-1), who faced a 1-0 deficit at halftime.

“I thought we absolutely dominated the first half but we just didn’t get the results and that’s been the story all year,” said Falmouth Coach Andrew Pelletier. “We just haven’t been able to score goals when we create the chances. We played a little more direct tonight on purpose and it worked out.”

Although Falmouth felt it dominated early, it was York (3-2-1) that scored the goal for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Elaine Cavalieri got it late in the half, an unassisted goal on a shot that trickled past goalkeeper Adelaide Cooke of the Yachtsmen.

“Elaine Cavalieri got it, turned and fired at the net,” York Coach Walter Caldwell said. “One of their defenders stuck her foot out and it went off her foot and into the net.”

Nine minutes into the second half, Babikian made it 1-1 on a cross from Spence after a corner kick.

The cross was deflected by York goalkeeper Emma Rohrer but Babikian was in the right place to capitalize on the rebound.

“The first (goal) they got, they should not have gotten a corner kick, but we pushed the ball over the end line when we could have pushed the ball out of bounds over the sideline (which would have resulted in a throw-in),” Caldwell said.

Falmouth took the lead less than 10 minutes later, off another corner kick that pinballed briefly until Van Wickler tucked it in.

“They were right there. The ball was all over the place, everyone was kicking at it. That’s the nature of the game,” Caldwell said.

“It was lucky for them and it was unlucky for us.”

Falmouth outshot York 11-10 on the night, also building a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.

“Either they were getting more pressure on us or we were moving the ball out of bounds on the end line, which we shouldn’t, and that happened a couple times,” Caldwell said, “so that was tough.”

“We have two girls that can put the corner kick exactly where we want it every single time on each side and tonight we finished two off corner kicks,” said Pelletier.

Pelletier also said the Yachtsmen have made adjustments on offense.

“We have just had trouble finishing but we made an adjustment (in practice Monday) and it seemed to work tonight,” said Pelletier.

“We’re happy about it.”

Rohrer put in a good effort in goal for York, finishing with five saves.
