A 51-year-old St. Albans man was killed Monday afternoon when his car struck a telephone pole at a high rate of speed on St. Albans Road in Palmyra.

Earl Hanson was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Mark Brooks of the Maine State Police. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the accident, which was reported at 2:32 p.m.

Hanson lost control of his car, a blue, four-door Chevy sedan. The car left the road and struck a utility pole, Brooks said. The car rolled over and Hanson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.

The speed limit in the area is 45 mph, but police believe Hanson was driving at a higher speed, said Brooks.

Troopers George Neagle and Chris Carr are investigating the accident.

There were no other occupants in the car.
