BOSTON — Defenseman Zdeno Chara opened the scoring on a power play with 5:43 left in the third period in the Boston Bruins’ 2-0 exhibition victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Tuukka Rask made 14 saves for Boston in the first two periods, and Jeremy Smith completed the shutout with 12 saves in the third. Simon Gagne added an empty-net goal.

Washington’s Braden Holtby made 21 saves in the first two periods and Pheonix Copley added eight saves in the third.

SENATORS SWEEP LEAFS: Bobby Ryan scored twice and Craig Anderson stopped 20 shots as Ottawa took a 3-2 victory in the home half of a split-squad matchup with Toronto.

Milan Michalek scored the winning shootout goal for Ottawa in a 4-3 win in the game in Toronto.

FLAMES 4, COYOTES 3: Curtis Glencross scored on a power play at 3:10 of overtime to lift Calgary over Arizona.

Sylvan Lake, Alberta, a community of 13,000, hosted the game as part of its winning Kraft Hockeyville bid.

Deryk Engelland, Brian McGrattan and Sven Baertschi also scored for the Flames. B.J. Crombeen had a goal and an assist for Arizona, Matt Kassian and Joe Vitale also scored, and Chris Summers had two assists.

HURRICANES 4, ISLANDERS 2: Defenseman Ryan Murphy had a goal and an assist, and Drew MacIntyre made 24 saves to help Carolina beat the host Islanders.

STARS 4, PANTHERS 3: Ales Hemsky scored the only goal in a shootout to give Dallas a road victory.

Hemsky beat Michael Houser with a deke to the backhand in the top half of the fourth round. Jussi Rynnas stopped all four Florida shooters in the tiebreaker.

NOTES

RANGERS: Center Derek Stepan suffered a non-displaced fracture of his left fibula and will be out 4 to 6 weeks.

Stepan, who was held out of a scrimmage and Monday’s game against the Devils with a foot injury, was helped off the ice Wednesday morning after falling and injuring his leg during a conditioning drill.
