Special Olympics benefit to take place Saturday

The Second Annual Amy’s Run-Walk, a 5K run or mile walk benefiting Maine School Administrative District 60’s Special Olympics program, will be held Saturday morning at Vivian E. Hussey School, 20 Blackberry Hill Road.

The walk was founded in memory of Amy Harris, a beloved special education teacher at Hussey School.

The 5K start time is 9:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 9:40 a.m.

Admission fee for the race is $15 to $20 and walk fees are $10 to $15. The first 100 people to sign up will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

Garden expert to discuss insects that help pollinate

Baxter Memorial Library will host the lecture “Pollinators in the Garden: You are Their Heroes!” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at 71 South St.

Gardener, horticulturist and author Joan Calder’s lecture will focus on bees, butterflies and other pollinators in the program, which is geared to ages 12 and older.

Calder’s book “Airplanes in the Garden” will be available for sale at the lecture.

Plants for pollinators and bee pods will also be for sale.

This free lecture is sponsored by the Gorham Garden Club and the Friends of Baxter Memorial Library.

Learn about musrooms from a noted mycologist

The Damariscotta River Association will sponsor a workshop on mushroom identification and appreciation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Noted mycologist Greg Marley will teach the knowledge, skills and confidence to begin identifying common Maine wild mushrooms.

The class will focus on both edible and medicinal uses of local mushrooms.

The morning will feature a mix of lecture and demonstration using fresh mushrooms and photos of Maine mushrooms, giving participants the foundation knowledge necessary to begin to identify common mushrooms.

Following lunch, the program will move into the forest to view and collect mushrooms. The afternoon session will support the material addressed in the morning session and focus on those mushrooms fruiting at the time the class is meeting.

Pre-registration and payment of $60 per person is required by Thursday. Limited scholarships are available.

Book club will examine issues facing young girls

The Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library, at 5 Monument Square, will host a monthly Girl’s Point of View Book Club that will meet from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and on the first Saturday of each month thereafter.

The book club will provide an opportunity for girls 9 to 12 to read contemporary fiction that focuses on issues many girls are facing today.

The club will provide a forum where girls can explore what’s on their minds while strengthening their sense of self. The books read will act as catalysts to spark critical conversations about the roles of girls and women in the past, and examining the girl culture of today.

The book club will be facilitated by the Children’s Library staff and is a program of Mainely Girls, a statewide, non-profit organization whose mission is to bring about positive change for girls.

Registration is required, as space is limited.

The library will provide copies of books to be read.
