SOUTH BERWICK — Lindsey Poirier, who has been dealing with an ankle sprain all season, scored twice Friday, including the go-ahead goal in the second half as Marshwood defeated Cheverus 5-1 in an SMAA field hockey game.

“I sat out against Scarborough and then played three minutes in the following game and worked my way up to this,” said Poirier, who estimated that her ankle is about 80 percent healthy.

“Games like this, I really don’t want to sub out because it’s a high-level game. Cheverus is fun to play; they’re an awesome bunch of girls.”

The Hawks (7-1) dominated most of the game, holding a 9-3 advantage in shots against the Stags (6-2-1) and a 15-2 advantage in corners.

“We didn’t want Lindsey Poirier to beat us so we put someone on her to take her out of the game,” Cheverus Coach Amy Ashley said.

“In the first half we did a good job but the second half was a different story.”

After Claudia Folger gave Marshwood the lead after 1:47, sophomore Carrie Hight tied it on a cross from Emily Michaud with 11:31 remaining in the first half – her first varsity goal.

“(Hight) just began starting for us and she’s done a really nice job,” Ashley said. “It was a beautiful goal.”

In the second half, Poirier put Marshwood ahead 2-1 with 21:12 left on a shot that snuck through traffic and found the back of the net on the left side.

Marshwood continued pressing, then scored three minutes later when Jessica Kimball turned and fired a shot into the right side of the net to make it 3-1.

Marshwood scored two more goals in the next 2:05.

“I would have called a lot more timeouts if I had them,” said Ashley.

Marshwood Coach Lisa Truesdale was particularly impressed with Kimball’s goal.

“She hasn’t scored many and I love that once the ball presented itself, she got it off,” said Truesdale.

“That’s the one I got most excited for.”

Claudia Folger scored the final two goals for Marshwood, and Truesdale also cited the play of Hannah Costin.

“(Costin) controlled the pace of the game. She was very poised,” said Truesdale.

“She along with Claudia Folger, was my pick for player of the game. Everybody reacted to and fed off her level of intensity. Overall it was a team effort.”

Cassidy Smith was solid in goal, making eight saves for the Hawks.

Taylor Gilbert added an assist for Marshwood.
