WATERVILLE — Police say they recovered the body of a woman who jumped off the Carter Memorial Bridge on Tuesday afternoon in front of several vehicles and people who witnessed the jump from the Water Street boat landing.

“We are still investigating the case, but it is very unlikely that there will be any other issues,” said Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey. “It’s very unfortunate.”

The woman, whose name is not being released, was dead at the scene. Her name is not being released because she did not commit a crime, Massey said. Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, police received several calls from people driving over the bridge saying that a woman was sitting on the edge of the bridge with her feet dangling over the edge, he said.

Shortly afterward, they received a call saying that she had jumped into the water and was face down in the Kennebec River.

“That prompted a large response from fire and rescue personnel as well as police,” Massey said.

The woman’s body was recovered about 300 yards from the bridge, he said.
