A 72-year-old North Berwick man died Wednesday when his pickup truck crossed a rural road and slammed into an embankment.

Robert Tapley, who lived on Turkey Street, died at the scene of the crash on Linscott Hill Road, but police may never know the cause of the accident, said North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley. He said investigating officers will meet with staff from the state Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if a medical issue contributed to the crash, which was reported at 10:35 a.m.

“He basically, for some unknown reason, drove across the road and off the opposite side,” Peasley said. “There were no skid marks or other marks to show he was avoiding something.”

Tapley’s dog – the only other occupant in the Ford F-150 – was not injured in the crash, according to police.
