The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram and WCSH-TV will host “The Bear Hunting Forum,” a discussion with experts heading into November’s statewide ballot measure on bear-hunting practices.

The Nov. 4 referendum asks voters: “Do you want to ban the use of bait, dogs or traps in bear hunting except to protect property, public safety, or for research?” Maine is the only state to allow all three hunting methods to manage its population of 30,000 bears, one of the largest in the country.

Representing the Yes on 1 campaign will be Katie Hansberry, campaign manager for Mainers For Fair Bear Hunting, and Daryl DeJoy, executive director for the Wildlife Alliance of Maine. Representing the No on 1 campaign will be James Cote, campaign manager for Save Maine’s Bear Hunt, and Judy Camuso, wildlife division director at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

All four will field questions from Portland Press Herald outdoors reporter Deirdre Fleming and NewsCenter reporter Bill Green. The taped forum will be aired at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, on WCSH (Ch. 6) in Portland and WLBZ (Ch. 2) in Bangor.

You are invited to send questions that may be asked of the panelists to dfleming@pressherald.com or bigreen@wcsh.gannett.com.
