FALMOUTH — It was a senior appreciation night for the Falmouth volleyball team and the Yachtsmen made sure it was memorable.

The defending Class A state champions swept three games to hand Greely its first loss.

Falmouth won the best-of-five match 25-17, 25-15, 25-17, rebounding from a 3-0 loss to the Rangers on Sept. 23.

“Honestly, I’ve never seen us play like this,” said Leigh Bernardy, a senior outside hitter. “Everybody played unbelievably. Nobody had a bad game.”

“This is what we’ve been working for, trying to get those six or seven players on the court so they gel together,” Falmouth coach Gary Power said. “The last time they beat us it was by a total of seven points. We had eight service violations. We had six net violations. That’s what we worked on, trying to fix the little mistakes.”

Thursday night, the Yachtsmen (10-2) didn’t make those mistakes.

“We had a couple of net violations and a couple of missed serves, but other than that (we) played well,” Powers said.

The Rangers dropped to 11-1.

“I just think we probably didn’t come to play but I’m not worried one bit,” Greely Coach Kelvin Hasch said. “(The players) will respond. We’ll probably have a good practice tomorrow.”

The Yachtsmen did a good job of keeping the ball away from sophomore sensation Kayley Cimino.

“We need Kayley to hit the ball and we couldn’t get it to her,” Hasch said.

“We definitely wanted to hit to the back line because we knew they like to creep up to center,” Bernardy said. “We knew the spots to go from playing them last time.”

“(Falmouth) passed the ball and they went for every ball,” Hasch said. “They didn’t let the ball drop. When you can’t pass and hit the ball, it makes it easier for them to play defense.”

In the first game, the Yachtsman ran off eight straight points to take a 16-11 lead.

Ally Hickey took over the game down the stretch, scoring eight of Falmouth’s final 12 points on a mix of spikes and blocks.

“After we won the first game, we saw that we’ve got this,” said Hickey, a senior middle hitter. “We all wanted to win, especially for the seniors. That was all the motivation I needed.”

The Yachtsmen took an 8-1 lead and cruised in the second game.

The third game was tied four times before Falmouth reeled off runs of 4-0 and 5-0 to pull away.

“We just came for the game with fire in our feet,” Bernardy said. “We played the game and put it all together. For a while, we couldn’t mesh, but today we did.”
