YARMOUTH — For the second time this season, Ben Ekedahl kicked a field goal as time was running out to lift Cape Elizabeth to victory.

On Sept. 12, after the Capers blew a 21-0 lead, Ekedahl kicked a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the game for a 32-29 victory against Poland.

On Friday night, he kicked a 36-yard field goal as time was expiring to propel Cape to a 31-28 victory against Yarmouth in a Western Class C game.

“I was thinking I was going to make it,” Ekedahl said. “I do it in practice all the time. It was a great hold by (Jeb Boesechenstein) and then it just went right through.”

Actually, the ball just made it inside the left post and over the crossbar.

The Capers (4-2) survived a fourth-quarter rally by the Clippers (3-3), who trailed by 22 points early in the final period.

“We just didn’t close,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Aaron Filieo said. “We’ve got to finish those games earlier with less drama, that’s for sure.”

Cape took a 21-0 lead in the first 17 minutes.

Following the opening kickoff, Devon Stanford, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman, finished an eight-play, 60-yard drive by plunging in from the 1.

With 2:15 left in the first quarter, Jack Drinan ran 58 yards down the left side of the field for a touchdown, three plays after Ethan Murray intercepted a pass on his 36.

Less than five minutes into the second quarter, Drinan scored on a 4-yard run to finish a 36-yard drive, 14 plays after Henry Shroder blocked a Yarmouth punt.

The Clippers got a lift when Cody Cook returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown that made it 21-6.

Yarmouth turned the ball over three times in the first half to negate any other scoring opportunities.

The Capers, who compiled 443 yards, moved into a 28-6 lead when Nate Weare ran 38 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Cook then returned the kickoff 74 yards. Two plays later, Lucas Uhl plunged in from the 1 and the Clippers were back in the game.

With 7:05 left, Cook made it 28-20 when he scored on a 20-yard run. Jack Snyder set up the score with a 50-yard run on the first play after the Clippers took over on downs at the Yarmouth 30.

The Clippers tied it when Uhl went in from the 1 with 3:16 left to complete a four-play, 74-yard drive that included a pass from quarterback John Thoma to Snyder that netted 50 yards.

Cook then rushed for the 2-point conversion to make it 28-28.

“I’m very proud of our guys for the fight they had,” Yarmouth Coach Jason Veilleux said.

“We just need to execute. We have to learn to play four full quarters.”
