Reservations being taken for Cash for Clothes Sale

Organizers of the semi-annual Cash for Clothes Sale are accepting reservations for the fundraiser event, set for Oct. 25-27, that will benefit Coastal Opportunities, an agency that assists adults with intellectual disabilities to become participating members in their social and economic communities.

Individuals who wish to sell new or gently used fall or winter clothing at the event may pre-register from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday or from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas Corcoran Center, 35 Limerock St.

Participants will register their name and address and will be given identification tags, lists for clothing and instruction sheets.

All proceeds will be split evenly between the seller and Coastal Opportunities.

The event will be held at the American Legion Hall on Pearl Street.

Golf tourney raises money for Special Olympics athletes

A Tee Up and Drive Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by the Sanford Golf Club, has raised more than $6,000 to benefit Waban’s Special Olympics athletes.

Some 70 golfers participated in the third annual golf tourney, which raised enough money to sponsor 30 athletes to attend the 2015 Special Olympics in Orono.

Gym Dandies in New York’s Columbus Day parade

The Gym Dandies of Scarborough Schools will appear in the Columbus Day parade in New York City on Monday.

This marks the team’s second such outing to the Big Apple; the first was the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2005.

More recently, the Gym Dandies performed in the 2013 Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C.

The 44-member team comprises students age 8 to 17 who perform stylized unicycle formations. Most of the riders will be mounted atop 6-foot-high giraffe unicycles, some of them juggling at the same time.

The group is the largest school-based children’s circus in the country. More than 3,500 Scarborough children have participated in the program since its inception in 1981.

School district recognizes volunteers’ commitment

The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District School Committee recently recognized several individuals for committed service to the district.

Outgoing School Committee member Cory Thyng was recognized by Committee Chair Helena Ackerson for his service to the School Committee.

Rita Coulton, Kathy Graham, Sally Morse, Bonnie Quint, Louretta Russell and Julie Stevens all were recognized for volunteer work to maintain the flower and shrub garden in front of Wells Junior High School.

Also, WOCSD director of technology Michael Richards was honored for his stewardship of the district’s website at www.k12wocsd.net.

Waynflete School gets grant for mentor program

Waynflete School has received a grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, benefiting the school’s multi-faceted mentoring program.

The $5,000 grant will support several programs that partner Waynflete students with those at the Reiche Community School in the city’s West End neighborhood.

The programs include two afterschool mentoring programs, where older students are paired with the younger students for activities; the Project Story Boost literacy program for young readers offered by Reiche and staffed by volunteer students and parents from Waynflete; a Buddy Lunch program where Waynflete students pair up with Reiche students for a weekly lunch; and the summer community recreation programs sponsored by the West End and Parkside Community Policing Centers.

Therapeutic Riding Center hosts dining and dancing

The Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center’s indoor heated arena will be transformed into a dining and dancing area from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday to host the Triple B:Boots, Band and BBQ fundraiser.

The evening features DennyMike’s barbecue fare, dancing to the live music of the band “Under The Covers,” a photo booth, Best Boots contest and door prizes. Michelle Taylor, 99.9 The Wolf’s morning DJ, will emcee, and auctioneer Elizabeth Holmstrom will call the unique mission-based auction.

A limited number of tables of eight are available and individual tickets are $50 per person.
