Benefit doll show and sale

Fun ‘lock-down’ at library

Scarborough students in middle school are invited to the Scarborough Public Library’s Teen Lock-Down on Friday evening.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the “lock down” following from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for special activities throughout the building, including karaoke, a haunted maze through the book stacks, movie trivia games and a Wii tournament.

The event is planned by members of the library’s Teen Advisory Board and Youth Services staff.

Registration will close at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Conference on Common Core

Registrations are being accepted through Oct. 20 for individuals wishing to attend the New England Fall-Out from Common Core Conference, to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Ramsdell-Rogers Function Facility, American Legion Post 56, 9 Hannaford Drive.

This daylong event is being held in response to questions being raised by parents, teachers and taxpayers regarding the new Common Core State Standards that are being fully implemented this year and the Common Core aligned Smarter Balanced tests that will be administered throughout the year.

The conference will bring together speakers from Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Louisiana and Indiana.

Maine Coast Memorial Hospital will host a community Health Fair from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the medical office building of the hospital at 50 Union St.

There will be free screenings for cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body composition, skin cancer and dental. There will also be information available on mammogram scholarships, and nutrition and diabetes support.

Maine vet to share memoir

Author Paul Marshall, 90, of Hope will talk about his recently written memoir, “Maine Boy Goes to War,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Camden Public Library, 55 Main St.

A retired United Methodist Church minister, Marshall will share his experiences of growing up in the shadow of Mount Katahdin in a one-room, tarpaper shack, and of his combat medic service during World War II in Europe.

Hiking challenge for kids

Bath Trails is calling all adventurous youth to complete the five-mile Whiskeag Trail at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Parents and kids can park cars at the Bath YMCA and catch the Bath Trolley to Thorne Head Preserve to start the hike.

The hike will be led by Bath Trail’s trail stewards with naturalist lessons and crafts along the way.

Trail snacks will be provided to keep hikers’ energy up and there is a prize for kids that finish the trek.
