The death of a Nova Star crewman on the ferry’s final voyage to Portland this season is being investigated by the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The 52-year-old crewman was not on duty when he died at around 3:30 p.m. Monday, about 3½ hours before the ferry was scheduled to arrive at the Ocean Gateway passenger terminal from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, according to ferry operator Nova Star Cruises. The ship’s nurses tried to revive the crewman, the company said.

Mark Amundsen, president and CEO of Nova Star Cruises, said in a written statement that he would not disclose any more details out of respect for the crewman’s family.

“On behalf of the owners, staff and crew of Nova Star, we wish to express our deepest condolences to the crew member’s family and friends and thank our crew for their extraordinary efforts in response to this medical emergency,” Amundsen said.

Fleet Pro, the Miami-based company that hired and managed the ship’s crew, will be handling all the repatriation details for the deceased and will keep the family informed, Amundsen said.

He said the ship’s crew members must pass annual medical and fitness examinations to work on board.
