WESTBROOK — A downpour brought an abrupt halt to an SMAA boys’ soccer game Thursday night between Cheverus and Westbrook at Olmsted Field.

Play was halted 17:47 into the first half when game officials sent the teams to their benches before conferring with both coaches.

“Based on the field conditions, (the game) became unplayable,” Westbrook Athletic Director Mike Connolly said. “The officials said (they were) already soaked and wet and it (didn’t) make any difference to (them), but it was getting into a situation where it could be unsafe for the kids. As much as we want to get games in when we can, we don’t want to jeopardize anyone’s safety.”

Connolly was unsure of a makeup date.

This was the last regular-season game for the Blue Blazes. Cheverus is scheduled to play Tuesday night at Gorham, the last day of the regular season as mandated by the Maine Principals’ Association.

Because the game was halted in the first half, it will be replayed in its entirety.

Westbrook led 1-0 before the game was called off. Gradi Lapika scored at 6:46 on a rebound. He fired a left-footed shot from the left side of the penalty area after Cheverus goalie Jake Tomkinson slid to kick the ball from Alex Nason, who had broken in alone on the left.

Westbrook (6-5-1) and Cheverus (6-3-3) are jockeying for position in the Western Class A Heal point standings.

The region’s top four teams – Falmouth, Scarborough, Gorham and Deering – have secured spots in the quarterfinals of the regional tournament.
