Talks on vision, hearing issues set for Wednesday

A Certified Rehabilitation Therapist from the Iris Network will speak on vision issues and a representative from the Maine Center on Deafness will speak on communication solution during a talk set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Most Holy Trinity Church on Main Street.

University College open house celebrates relocation

University College at Saco, an Outreach Center of the University of Maine System, will hold an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday to celebrate the relocation of the center to the Saco Valley Shopping Center. The regional office of Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community and York County Senior College has moved with the center and will be part of the celebration.

Museum to offer spooky flashlight tour for Halloween

The L.C. Bates Museum will host “Spooky Flashlight Tours!” from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday through Oct. 31 on Route 201.

Come for a creepy tour by flashlight to discover owls and things that go bump in the night! The facility will be decked out for Halloween, have animal displays featuring vampire bats and venomous creatures.

Attendees are welcome to come in costume, dress warmly and bring a flashlight.

Public library will host several events this week

Camden Public Library will host a number of events this week.

 Dan Wyman of Allen Insurance and Financial will head the presentation “Health Insurance Requirements (ACA) Update” at noon Monday, detailing the ACA requirements that Americans must have health insurance or pay a tax penalty. The next “open enrollment” period for individual health insurance policies is Nov. 15 to Feb. 15.

 Join Pete Kalajian and family at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the presentation “Adventure in Guadalajara,” detailing the family’s two years working and travelling throughout Mexico.

Waterfall Arts joining in global sketch-fest events

The Big Draw, a free global sketch-fest drawing event, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Waterfall Arts at 256 High St.

This annual celebration of drawing coincides with similar offerings around the world in more than 20 countries, with 280,000 people expected to join in. The event includes free drawing activities that connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators – and each other.

Adults are welcome to try out the live model Figure Drawing session at Waterfall Arts every Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The drop-in fee for life drawing is $15. For this week only, drawing materials will be provided for first-timers.

Science Sleuths Halloween event to host experiments

Students in Grades 3-5 are invited to attend “Science Sleuths: the Halloween Edition” at 4 p.m. Thursday at Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St.

Students will experiment with candy to test hypotheses about density. This will involve melting Skittles to change the density of water, testing which Halloween candies float and which don’t, and even blowing up a marshmallow Peep. For the grand finale, some slime will be made to take home.

Young makers invited to create, invent and tinker

Nature center hosting two classes on eastern white pine

Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson will host two classes focused on Maine’s most iconic tree, the eastern white pine.

White pine’s historical and present-day significance in Maine is profound. The classes are designed to be taken together, but participants are welcome to sign up for one or the other. Both will feature plenty of time in the woods.

The morning class is titled “White Pine Ecology – A Field Study” and will be led by naturalist Erek Sherin from 9 to 11:30am.

The afternoon class, “Growing White Pine: Field Study of Forestry Practices” will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., led by Barrie Brusila, of Mid-Maine Forestry, and Andy Shultz. the landowner outreach forester for the Maine Forest Service

Both classes are intended for educators, naturalists and landowners engaged in active forest management. Tuition for each class is $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers.

Meet Lady Grace, a bald eagle that has been cared for by the Wind Over Wings program for two years after an injury to her wing.

Planetarium hosting annual Halloween, monster program

Southworth Planetarium will host its 13th annual Halloween party from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at 70 Falmouth St.

This year’s program features a new live-action program called “Sky Monsters!” at 6:30 and 7:15 p.m., a look at monsters in the stars, including Draco the Dragon and Medusa.

Also offered will be a Moon Witch show at 6 and 6:45 p.m. featuring telescope viewing, followed by the sixth annual Ghost Hour from 8 to 9 p.m.

Pilot program of seniors brain games at library

York Pubic Library will host “Brain Games for Seniors,” a four-week program featuring stimulating brain exercises, puzzles, riddles, games, simple math and more to promote memory, better concentration, new ways to reason and other cognitive skills.

Correct answers are not important … having fun, doing the activity and interacting as a group is what is important.

This is a pilot program with limited space for 12 participants.
