JURISPRUDENCE

SPORTS BETTING: The four major U.S. pro sports leagues and the NCAA again urged a judge to stop New Jersey from allowing legalized sports betting this weekend.

An order to show cause was filed in federal court. The NFL, the NBA, the NHL, Major League Baseball and the NCAA want U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp to temporarily prevent New Jersey’s casinos and racetracks from taking sports wagers.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: The Champions League returned with a 40-goal bonanza as Bayern Munich thrashed Roma 7-1 for its biggest victory on the road and Luiz Adriano scored five as Shakhtar put seven past BATE Borisov.

Chelsea wasn’t far behind in a 6-0 win over Maribor, but Manchester City remained without a victory in three matches after wasting a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at CSKA Moscow.

AUTO RACING

DRIVERS SETTLE: Joey Logano said he’s made peace with Danica Patrick and isn’t worried she’ll intentionally wreck him to ruin his championship chances.

Logano spun Patrick during the Oct. 11 race at Charlotte and she was given permission over her team radio to retaliate. She later remarked that wrecking Logano would have no effect on his title chances because he’d already earned a spot in the third round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

NO PENALTY: NASCAR decided not to penalize Ryan Newman after his car failed inspection following the race at Talladega.

TENNIS

WTA FINALS: Maria Sharapova’s chances of claiming the season-ending No. 1 ranking were hurt by a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-2 loss to Caroline Wozniacki at Singapore

SWISS INDOORS: Fourth-seeded Milos Raonic hit 12 aces and saved all five break points he faced as he beat Steve Johnson of the United States 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the first round at Basel.

VALENCIA OPEN: Tommy Robredo advanced to the second round by beating fifth-seeded John Isner 7-6 (3), 6-3 in Spain.

FISHING

RECORD CATCH: A day after Idaho opened its first fishing season for sea-run coho salmon, an angler hooked one that broke a state record.

“It’s kind of neat,” said Ethan Crawford of Moscow, Idaho, of the 9.4-pound, 31-inch female coho he caught Saturday. “It’s just cool we have this season and opportunity to catch coho.”
