FALMOUTH — Falmouth tuned up for the Western Class B football playoffs Friday night by cruising to a 42-12 win against Greely.

It was the fifth consecutive win for the Yachtsmen, who finished the regular season with a 7-1 record and earned the No. 3 seed in the regional playoffs.

Using a balanced attack, Falmouth scored on its first four possessions to open up a 28-12 halftime lead. The Yachtsmen sealed the win with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“We wanted to have an absolute balance between running and passing,” Falmouth Coach John Fitzsimmons said. “Greely is a team with nothing but heart and explosiveness, so we needed to control the clock or they can torch you because they’re so good.”

The Yachtsmen achieved that balance while beating Greely for the first time since 2011.

Falmouth quarterback Noah Nelson completed 13 of 17 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. The Yachtsmen also rushed for 213 yards.

“Noah was in command of the game at quarterback,” Fitzsimmons said. “Noah is very good at finding who is open and who to hit.”

Connor Aube rushed for 134 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 80 yards.

“Connor Aube is a special player,” Fitzsimmons said. “He can do it all.”

The game was scheduled to be played at Greely’s Hutchins Field but was moved to Falmouth’s artificial turf field.

“After three days of rain, our field was soaked and it was unplayable,” said Greely Athletic Director David Shapiro.

Greely Coach Dave Higgins said it wouldn’t have made any difference where the teams played.

“We just didn’t have the answer for them tonight,” Higgins said. “(Falmouth is) a very good football team, and we got a (drubbing) tonight. That’s the long and the short of it.”

The Rangers finished the regular season at 4-4 with their third consecutive loss and will be the No. 4 seed in the playoffs.

They took a 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the game when Sam Peck scored on a 3-yard to run, capping a six-play, 73-yard drive following the opening kickoff. Peck, a junior running back, ran for all but 11 of those yards.

Falmouth answered when fullback George Gilbert ran 27 yards for a touchdown with six minutes left in the first quarter. Alden Murphy kicked the first of his six extra points to make it 7-6.

The Yachtsmen extended their lead three minutes later when Nelson ran 3 yards for a touchdown.

Falmouth then broke it open in the second quarter, as Aube scored on a 7-yard and Nelson threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt Edmonds.

Greely ended the first half on a high note. While running a hurry-up offense, quarterback Matt Pisini completed 5 of 7 passes during the final 90 seconds of the second quarter, eventually hooking up with Peck on a pass play that covered 34 yards with 5.7 seconds left.

Aube scored on runs of 1 and 6 yards in the last seven minutes.

The Falmouth defense forced five turnovers as the Yachtsmen evened the all-time series against Greely at 6-6.
