SOUTH BERWICK — Sam Leathe made 15 saves and Marshwood scored 18 seconds into the game on its way to a 2-0 win over Westbrook in a Western Maine Class A prelim game Saturday afternoon.

The eighth-seed Hawks (8-6-1) advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 1 Scarborough at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“(Westbrook is) good. They play hard, they play fast. They’re passionate, they’re athletic. They’re a good team,” Marshwood Coach Ben Deschene said. “We played hard and we worked until the end.”

Gus Leisentritt struck early to give Marshwood the lead. Westbrook’s Luther Williams attempted to head the ball back to goalie DJ Henrikson, but Henrikson was trying to come out to play the ball and the header got past him. Leisentritt retrieved the loose ball and found the net.

“I guess they just wanted to swing the ball back and get into their defensive end there,” Leisentritt said. “I was going to charge the keeper anyway so I was ready for it.”

“It was an unfortunate mix of nerves and miscommunication,” said Westbrook Coach Greg Cavanaugh.

Marshwood had opportunities to cushion their lead. With 11:30 left in the first half, Coleman McIntire had a penalty shot turned away by Henrikson. In the second half, Eyob Bosse scored a goal but was offsides.

“There’s a natural tendency to have a letdown after a missed PK or a goal that gets called back on an offside call but we didn’t have any letdowns after those things happen and that’s part of the reason why we shut those guys out,” said Deschene.

Westbrook outshot Marshwood 21-9 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

“We couldn’t quite finish any spark of brilliance that we started,” said Cavanaugh.
