KENNEBUNK — Tiffany Weeks scored 3:39 into overtime as fourth-seeded Kennebunk advanced to the Western Class B field hockey semifinals with a 2-1 win Saturday over No. 5 Cape Elizabeth.

Both sides were substituting on the fly and playing seven-on-seven according to overtime rules when Weeks, a senior midfielder, struck for the winning goal.

“Cape is a very physical team and they’re usually all over you. It was just a lucky moment for us,” said Weeks. “We told each other we didn’t want this to be our last game.”

Kennebunk (10-5), which plays home games on a grass surface, lost to the Capers (6-8-1) earlier this season on artificial turf in Cape Elizabeth.

“We knew home field would be our plus-one today,” Kennebunk Coach Kayla Billings said.

Kennebunk dominated the first half and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lindsey Gregoire. Cape Elizabeth was held without a shot and produced only one penalty corner in the opening 30 minutes.

The Rams maintained an edge in possession in the second half, but Cape Elizabeth tied the game with 20:45 remaining in regulation when senior forward Taylor Herrera scored on a deflection in traffic.

Terrific play from senior goaltender Mary DiPietro, who made eight saves, helped the Capers send the game into overtime.

“I told the girls they had to just pick up play,” Cape Coach Darci Holland said.

“I think we were very evenly matched teams.”

Kennebunk goes on the road Tuesday to face top-seeded York (15-0), the defending regional champion.

The teams met once during the regular season – a 2-0 York victory on its home field in mid-September.

“We absolutely have to take advantage of our offensive opportunities (against York),” said Billings. “This is incredibly exciting for us all.”
