IN PINK

The can-do energy of a group of women leads to an expanded fundraiser for the Maine Cancer Foundation.

Never underestimate the power of a few to impact the lives of many. A group of eight women joined forces to fight breast cancer, resulting in the Witches Wear Pink fundraiser for the Maine Cancer Foundation.

“My background is in pathology, and between my background and having a history of breast cancer in my family, I wanted to combine them for a good cause,” explained JoAnne Christman of Falmouth, mother of twins and champion of Witches Wear Pink. “This is our second year. Our goal was to double the size of the event from last year, but we’ve actually tripled it.”

Indeed, no stone was left unturned for the event at The Woodlands Club in Falmouth. Caldrons steamed with mist, black branches adorned with white lights created an intimate, seasonal feel and guests turned out in their seasonal best, all softened by the hue of pink. From feather boas to mood lighting, pink emanated throughout the party.

Jacki Billington, Amanda Rand and Paula Saabye, all of Falmouth, enjoyed the evening fashionably wrapped in pink shawls.

“Cancer has touched all of our lives and we’ve had friends who are breast cancer survivors,” said Rand. “They’ve done a beautiful job tonight.”

Dana Kerr, a business professor at the University of Southern Maine, and his wife Francesca, a Witches Wear Pink committee member, chatted with friends Cheryl and Don Olsen of Falmouth.

Kelly Martin of the Maine Cancer Foundation was joined by her husband Randy.

Event emcee and Maine journalist Shannon Moss chatted with Karee Amato and Mike Carmichael of Falmouth.

Gail Waitkun of Portland shared a moment with close friend Cynthia Carrier-Burnett of Falmouth, herself a breast cancer survivor.

“This is about celebrating life and having fun,” Christman said as she welcomed guests, offering a toast. “Here’s to celebrating the present and changing the future.”
