Felting Fun workshop to make items for holidays

Living history performances to bring ghosts to cemetery

Spirits Alive will offer its final round of “Boom and Bust: Ghosts of 1807 Portland,” living history performances, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Eastern Cemetery, located at Congress and Washington streets on Munjoy Hill.

Professional actors from Acorn Productions will portray some of Portland’s famous historic characters who are buried at the cemetery.

Groups leave at 15-minute intervals on a first come, first-served basis.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds will be split between Spirits Alive, to help conserve the ancient memorial stones in the Eastern Cemetery, and to Acorn Productions, a nonprofit performing arts group.

Museum hosting volunteer meeting for annual festival

The Saco Museum will host a volunteer meeting for all returning and first-time participants for its annual Festival of the Trees event at 10 a.m. Tuesday at 371 Main St.

A variety of volunteer opportunities will be available during the festival, including leading school tours in the morning for local schoolchildren, staffing the museum and gift shop and greeting visitors.

Coffee and breakfast refreshments will be served.

The 10th Annual Festival of Trees will go from Nov. 28 through Dec. 31 at the museum, featuring dozens of decorated trees and wreaths based on this year’s theme, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

‘Russia Resurgent’ series to be offered at library

The Scarborough Public Library has partnered with the Camden Conference to bring a series of original programs to Scarborough, each of them exploring the theme “Russia Resurgent,” the theme of the 2015 conference, to be held Feb. 20 to 22 in Camden.

The first program in the series will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, featuring a presentation by literary translator Lisa Hayden.

Hayden will read passages from Russian literary works she has translated to illustrate ways contemporary Russian fiction writers address aspects of Russian history in their work.

National Garden Club head to attend Maine conference

National Garden Club President Linda Nelson of Portland, Ore., will attend the Garden Club Federation of Maine’s 83rd annual fall conference, set for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Augusta Civic Center.

Guest speakers are John Harker of Cranberry Creations, who will speak in the morning on growing cranberries, and Dr. Allison Dibble, professor at the University of Maine at Orono, who will speak about conserving habitats for pollinators.

The slate of officers for the 2015-2017 term will be announced along with reports and awards for the garden clubs.

The Maine federation comprises 42 garden clubs and more than 2,200 members.
