SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough High girls’ soccer team came into the Western Class A quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed, preparing to face an unknown Falmouth team that played mostly a Class B schedule.

“I had never seen them play,” Scarborough senior Katherine Kirk said. “I was nervous.”

Then nearly 30 minutes into the game, the score remained 0-0.

“I was definitely nervous,” Kirk said. “We had a few opportunities but didn’t capitalize.”

But one goal led to another, and then a bunch as the Red Storm topped seventh-seeded Falmouth 6-0 Wednesday night at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex.

Kirk paced Scarborough with a hat trick. Maddie Chen, Ashley Perriello and Sarah Barr also scored for the Red Storm (13-1-1).

Scarborough moves on to the semifinals and will host No. 3 Marshwood on Saturday. The Hawks gave Scarborough its only loss, 3-2 on Sept. 17.

The Yachtsmen (7-7-2) kept the game close, trailing 2-0 at halftime, but then had to take chances.

“We pulled our line up, trying to make it 2-1,” Falmouth Coach Andrew Pelletier said.

“Then they got the third goal and the floodgates opened.”

Falmouth showed a stout defense until Chen got the ball in the box, dribbled between two defenders and buried it for a 1-0 lead with 11:25 left in the first half.

Falmouth got its best chance three minutes later, but Red Storm goalkeeper Molly LeComte made a diving stop on a blast from Georgia Babikian.

The Red Storm made it 2-0 after a scrum in front resulted in a loose ball, which Perriello kicked in with 4:11 remaining in the half.

“We just kept pressuring and that worked out for us,” Kirk said.

The attack was intensified by Scarborough’s depth.

“The players who came off the bench – like Sarah Barr and Mairead Clonan – came in and really kept the pressure on,” said Scarborough Coach Mike Farley. “That was a big deal for us. Put in my subs and keeping the pressure at a high level. That’s how you get other teams to wilt a little.”

And Kirk was just getting warmed up.

Scarborough went up 3-0 in the second half when Barr led Kirk with a pass. She beat the goalkeeper to it and easily scored with 22:01 left.

Chen assisted Barr with 19:04 left and, 90 seconds later, Kirk got her second goal, on an assist from Bryce Nitchman for a 5-0 lead.

“After that burst in the second half, we could breathe,” Farley said.

Kirk finished the scoring with her third goal with an assist from Mary Farnkoff.

“Tactically, we adjusted things and it didn’t work,” Pelletier said. “That’s what happens against a good team.

“My girls worked hard. That’s all I really looked for.”
