There is, without doubt, a consensus in Maine that independent Eliot Cutler is a far better qualified candidate for governor than his opponents.

Cutler has valuable experience in developing job-creating businesses, in practicing law nationally and internationally, in managing the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and in helping enact the Clean Water and Clean Air acts.

There are abundant reasons to believe Cutler would make the best governor – in the mold of Angus King, Ken Curtis and Edmund Muskie. But calls persist for Cutler to withdraw so that, presumably, Democrat Mike Michaud’s path to the Blaine House can be an untroubled walk in Capitol Park.

Why should the person who is plainly best-suited by experience, intellect and energy withdraw to make way for an obviously inferior candidate, widely acknowledged to be of little imagination and accomplishment?

Vote for the candidate who’s up to the job. Vote for Eliot Cutler.
