Portland’s acting city manager has chosen a new director of the city’s Health and Human Services Department.

City Manager Sheila Hill-Christian has recommended Dawn Stiles to become the head of the health office. The City Council gets final approval.

Stiles is the executive director of a community center on Anna Maria Island, Florida. Before that, Stiles was president of Maine’s largest mental health agency, Spurwink Services, for about six years.

Stiles will oversee a department with about 400 employees and a budget of more than $38 million. The City Council is expected to consider her nomination in November and she’ll assume her new role on Dec. 1, if approved.
