ORONO — The University of Maine called on football fans to don their finest flannel apparel this weekend to break a world record. The attempt fell short, however, when only 1,000 fans turned out, about 100 fewer than needed.

At Saturday’s game against the University of New Hampshire, the UMaine Black Bears were hoping to break the Guinness world record for the most people wearing plaid or tartan-patterned clothing in one place. The school needed more than 1,090 people wearing two-plaid patterned items to attend the game. It had 1,500 plaid bandannas to give out to attendees.

Athletic Marketing Director John Diamond said UMaine officials hoped that the idea would boost attendance for the game.

The Black Bears were looking to topple top-ranked UNH to win back the Brice-Cowell Musket. A late Maine comeback bid ended with an interception as UNH won 20-12.
