A Knox County man was charged with criminal operating under the influence after his vehicle allegedly struck and killed a bicyclist Saturday night in Waldoboro.

Waldoboro Police Chief William Labombarde said police arrested Jeffrey Moran, 27, of Washington after his 1999 GMC Yukon hit and killed Jessie Hayden, 31.

Investigators said Hayden, whose hometown was not released, was bicycling along Feylers Corner Road in Waldoboro around 8:30 p.m. when the accident happened.

Moran notified authorities that he had found a bike in the middle of the road and saw a man lying in a ditch. Moran said the man was not breathing, according to Labombarde. Hayden was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Waldoboro Fire Department assisted police with the accident and traffic control. A section of Feylers Corner Road was shut down Saturday night.

Moran was arrested and charged with criminal OUI. He was being held Sunday night at the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where his bail had been set at $10,000 cash.

Maine State Police helped reconstruct the accident, which remains under investigation.
