Police were searching Monday for a Biddeford man who they say killed his mother when she was struck by the passenger door of the pickup truck he was driving.

Shane Jones, 26, of 6 Brackett St., may have fled the state after fatally striking Kimberly Jones, 49, at 5:15 p.m. Sunday while leaving his home, Biddeford police said.

The passenger door, which was open, hit Kimberly Jones as the truck was backing up, said Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk. The mother and son had been arguing, but it isn’t known what they had argued about, Fisk said.

Police obtained a warrant for Jones’ arrest, charging him with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and reckless conduct with a motor vehicle.

Jones has a lengthy adult criminal record dating to 2006 for charges that include burglary, theft, breaking into cars, receiving stolen property, escape from a correctional facility, eluding police, trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, forgery and domestic violence terrorizing, according to a state Department of Public Safety database.

He has two previous car crashes, both of which were because he was following too closely, police said. Nobody was injured.

In 2007, Kimberly Jones was charged as his accomplice in a string of car break-ins in the Biddeford area after she was caught driving a getaway vehicle with several stolen items inside, police said at the time. In that case, Shane Jones managed to briefly escape from the York County Jail in Alfred after being arrested by pretending to be a different inmate who was due for release, according to a Portland Press Herald story at the time.

Kimberly Jones had criminal convictions on her record for thefts, according to the state database.

David Googins, a landlord who rented apartments to Kimberly Jones at two different buildings, on High Street and Pine Street in Biddeford, said he had agreed to accept her as a tenant before learning of her and her son’s arrests.

“I thought it would be only Kim living there by herself, but she ended up dragging Shane with her. They were always fighting and drinking,” Googins said. “Shane was a pretty boisterous, loud person when he was drinking.”

Googins said he had a good relationship with Kimberly Jones for a while and rented to her for several years until 2010, when Shane Jones’ presence became too much of a problem. Kimberly Jones always tried to protect her son even when he was acting up, Googins said.

“I had to evict them,” Googins said. “When I was doing that, Shane would come by and rip the screen door off. I had to get the police involved.”

Police said Jones is believed to be driving a red Chevrolet S-10 pickup, likely an older model with a yellow strobe light on the roof. The pickup is believed to be the truck that hit Kimberly Jones.

Police said the license plate on the truck may be 9840 TR.

Jones has prior addresses in Middleboro, Massachusetts, and elsewhere in Maine, according to the Department of Public Safety database.

Police described Jones as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 155 pounds. They asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to call Biddeford police at 282-5127.
