ORONO — The American Association for the Advancement of Science is honoring a University of Maine archaeologist for his work.

The university says the association is naming Daniel H. Sandweiss a fellow for his contributions to the field. The association publishes the journal Science.

Science executive publisher Alan Leshner says Sandweiss is being honored for contributions including “pioneering interdisciplinary studies of early colonization of South America and the origins of El Nino.”

Sandweiss is a professor of anthropology and climate studies and cooperating professor of Earth and climate sciences and global policy. He has worked at UMaine since 1993.
