A one-vehicle crash on icy roads in Arundel claimed the life of a Saco man early Sunday morning and forced the closure of Route 1 for part of the day.

The crash happened on Route 1 about 7:30 a.m. near the bridge that separates Arundel from the Biddeford city line. Richard R. Johnson Sr. was driving south on Route 1 when he apparently lost control while driving over the ice-covered bridge, according to a news release from the York County Sheriff’s Office. Johnson’s 2005 GMC truck crossed over the raised median and into the northbound lane before striking the guardrail.

The pickup truck apparently slid on its side along the guardrail before striking a utility pole, which split as a result. The truck came to rest upside down in the northbound lane, deputies reported.

Johnson, whose age wasn’t immediately available, was pronounced dead at the scene. Chief Deputy William King Jr. of the York County Sheriff’s Office said that, according to a preliminary analysis, icy road conditions were the cause of the crash.

The section of Route 1 was closed from 7:30 a.m. until roughly 3 p.m. as first responders, utility crews and an accident reconstruction team worked at the scene.
