Coach of the Year

Brian Berkemeyer, Freeport: In his eighth year at the helm after seven as an assistant coach, Berkemeyer led a young team to the Class B title after it placed fourth in the Western Maine regional. It was the school’s first Class B title, and its first in any class since winning Class D in 1994. “It’s the runners, basically,” Berkemeyer said of senior Tyler Frey, sophomore Henry Jacques and juniors Chandler Vincent, Erik Brobst and Liam Gallagher (who dropped more than a minute from his time at the regional meet and rose from seventh on the team to fifth at the state meet). “They all set (personal records) in their last race.”
