Young people are the “seed corn” of Maine’s future – working energetically, starting innovative enterprises and creating jobs, populating our schools and caring for our growing number of older citizens. Yet so many of our best and brightest head for out-of-state jobs as soon as they graduate from high school or college.

A top priority for our state must be keeping our young here plus encouraging those who have left to return. I’d like to acknowledge the editors of this paper for concluding in their Dec. 6 editorial (“Our View: Maine is one of the top ‘takers’ of federal help”) that “we need to focus on the steps we can take to generate growth and attract more young people to our state.”
