I have just received word from Public Citizen that Sen. Susan Collins is sponsoring a rider to a bill before Congress that would increase the number of hours trucking companies can require of their drivers from 70 hours a week to 82 hours a week (“Collins criticized for bid to ease rest rules on truckers,” Dec. 12). I find this to be appalling and outrageous.
This proposal can have only one sure effect: an increase in fatalities involving trucks. I call upon fellow readers of the Portland Press Herald to communicate your opposition to Sen. Collins’ action to members of our congressional delegation. I have already done so.
