Twenty inmates of the Cumberland County Jail in Portland were placed in segregation this past Monday after testing positive for illegal drugs, WCSH-TV reported.

The inmates in one of the pods at the jail were given a random drug test, and 25 percent failed, the Portland television station reported.

Sheriff Kevin Joyce was surprised by the number of inmates who tested positive for drugs.

“It is a high number and the particular pod that we had found these individuals using had just been searched Friday and this was on Monday,” Joyce said.

Joyce said illicit drugs in the jail an ongoing problem because so many inmates are struggling with addiction, WCSH reported.
